Some of the trees in Wrocław are in a very difficult position and are quite heroic. One of the trees I’ve been observing to make sure if it still grows is a plane tree near Drobnera street, next to the entry to Nadodrze district. It is partially withered, its core is hollow and artificially fixed to prevent falling apart. There are few green branches left, however every year the tree develops leaves in spite of its surroundings: a pavement around it, trams, exhaust fumes everywhere in the Drobnera street. And this is really heroic.
The second tree is connected to a place, in which I live – Biskupin. It grows by the Odra river, on commons. It is a very violated willow with lots of mistletoe in it. In fact, there’s more mistletoe than leaves on the tree. It fights heroicly too. I’ve started to appreciate it more when my neighbors told me that during the flood the whole area was submerged and this tree had to withstand for many weeks underwater. It is one of the few trees that grow in this area.
